Main roles of ABI
The foundation of Agro-Biotechnology Institute, Malaysia (ABI) was authorized by the Council for the Implementation of Biotechnology (MPB) on 7th of September 2006 and legitimized by Cabinet Ministers Meeting on 26th of November 2006 through Cabinet paper No. 882/2534/2006. ABI founded under the Malaysian National Biotechnology Policy was launched by Malaysian Prime Minister on 21st of April 2005 with two other institutions (IPharm and MGI) under Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry.
ABI's scope of works cover research, development and commercialization products, technology, knowledge, IP and other Agro-Biotechnology R&D’s outcome for development and modernization of agricultural sector specifically for national and global generally.
Main functions of ABI

To generate technology, knowledge and products from agro-biotechnology R&D for the development of new sectors in agriculture

To be the national reference centre for agro-biotechnology

To develop highly skilled human resources for the advancement of Malaysian biotech industries
-
To be the focal point of Malaysia in networking with various local and international agro-biotechnology organizations as well as to strengthen the existing network and cooperation between the local agro-biotech institutions.
